Overthinking is a thief of joy. I find myself overthinking at times, but I try to avoid it because it can be stressful and adversely impact my relationships. Instead, I divert my attention by focusing on my work and doing things I love.

Those who are overthinking, may end up losing their minds. They need to distract their minds by doing some chores like cleaning their house or lawns. This will help their mental state focus on a new stimulus.
 
I agree with you that dwelling too much on thoughts can lead to unhappiness, especially because every time we have a recurring thought, it translates into worry/anxiety, or, in any case, it always turns out to be a negative thought.
If we think about a particular problem often, we do so only for one clear reason: try find a solution to that problem.
When we feel bad for any reason, we often think about times gone by, that is, when we were better. It's as if we want to relive those beautiful moments of our lives that perhaps can alleviate our current suffering.
