According to the report, Turkish authorities have detained nearly 1,418 people amid ongoing protests in Ankara over the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu on corruption charges. Critics call the case politically motivated, while authorities have responded with a crackdown that has alarmed rights groups. Seven journalists covering the protests, including AFP photographer Yasin Akgul, were remanded in custody, prompting a sharp rebuke from AFP. The court charged them with participating in “illegal rallies,” reversing an earlier decision to grant conditional release. Meanwhile, opposition CHP leader Ozgur Ozel visited Imamoglu and two other jailed mayors, calling their imprisonment a “shame” for Turkey’s leadership. He later announced a mass rally in Istanbul on March 30 to demand open trials and early elections. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan dismissed the protests as “street terror” and vowed not to be “fooled by cheap politics.” As he spoke, thousands of students marched in Istanbul, chanting “government, resign.” US Secretary of State Marco Rubio raised concerns over the arrests in a meeting with Turkey’s foreign minister, as Washington continues to monitor the escalating unrest.
