From Manila, Philippines’ report, seventeen Filipino seafarers, together with two other crew members, are safe after their vessel was allegedly attacked by Houthi rebels while sailing the Red Sea near Hodeidah, Yemen, on Sunday. In a news release on Tuesday, Department of Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac assured the public that they are working on the safe repatriation of the Filipino seafarers who are now safe and staying in Djibouti in East Africa for repatriation to the Philippines.
The report said that these Filipino seafarers fought back against the Houthi rebels. Cacdac said the LMA of the Filipino seafarers, Crewcare, Inc., reported that the crewmembers of the Liberian-flagged MV Magic Seas came under assault while sailing about 51 nautical miles southwest of Hodeidah. The vessel was attacked by “small boats with men armed with automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades."
The report added that the vessel’s security team managed to repel the attackers by returning fire, allowing the crew to abandon ship and be rescued by the passing container ship Safeen Prism. The other week, 7 Filipino seafarers were also attacked by Houthi rebels in the Red Sea, and thankfully, they were able to save themselves and were safely brought to Saudi Arabia. They are now back to the Philippines, safe and given health aids.
