A wave of tourists has flooded Rio de Janeiro, many seeking more than just the city’s famous landmarks and instead heading for favelas. The tours allow visitors to learn about areas that are often overlooked, but are also hubs of urban culture and art.
This influx of enthusiastic visitors has encouraged residents of low-income communities to turn tourism into a source of income.
According to the Rio City Council, in 2025 the city welcomed 12.5 million tourists, including 2.1 million international visitors. The number of international tourists rose 44.8 percent compared to 2024, contributing $1.5 billion to Rio’s economy.
