According to the report, A PHP500,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the suspect in the killing of former Kalibo mayor and journalist Juan “Johnny” Dayang, the Philippine National Police said (PNP) said Thursday. Dayang, 89, was a well-respected figure in Philippine journalism and had served as President Emeritus of the Publishers Association of the Philippines, Inc.

In a statement, the PNP said it continues to make headway in the case of the slain veteran journalist in line with the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to prioritize the safety and protection of members of the press.

The Police Regional Office 6 (Western Visayas) said local authorities have identified a male suspect in the killing of Dayang on April 29. According to the initial investigation, the suspect had a prior criminal record and was arrested during an illegal drug buy-bust operation in Pasig City in May 2021. Authorities confirmed that the case is ready for filing against the identified suspect, who is expected to face charges in connection with the killing.

The victim was a veteran and campus journalist in the Philippines. He was killed because of politics. The lives of the journalists in my country are like walking in a single thread.
