A Bulawayo woman has been remanded in custody after allegedly pouring boiling water on her sister’s maid in what authorities described as a shocking and unprovoked attack.

Privilege Moyo, 38, of Emganwini suburb, Zimbabwe, appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Archie Wochiwunga on charges of physical abuse.

Prosecutor Audrey Kufandikanwe told the court that the incident occurred on 28 August, when Moyo, who is the sister of the complainant’s employer, seized a pot of boiling water in the kitchen and poured it over the maid, Bethia Moyo.

This case is deeply disturbing, not only because of the physical harm caused but also because of the apparent lack of provocation behind the act. To pour boiling water on another human being is an extremely cruel and deliberate act that leaves not just physical scars but also lasting emotional trauma. It is difficult to understand what could drive someone to behave in such a violent way, especially within a household setting where trust and safety should be present. The fact that the accused, Privilege Moyo, is related to the employer of the victim only makes the situation more troubling, as it suggests a possible misuse of family ties and authority. The decision to remand her in custody seems appropriate given the severity of the allegations and the need to protect the victim from further harm. It also sends an important message that such behavior will not be tolerated, regardless of personal connections. Beyond the criminal proceedings, I hope Bethia Moyo receives both the medical care and psychological support she will undoubtedly need to recover. Incidents like this also highlight the broader issue of how domestic workers can be vulnerable to mistreatment, and why legal protections must be strongly enforced.

Employers need to exercise safety for the employees or they will be taken to court they also have rights to lay charges if they feel unsafe.

That criminal is insane. The maid should have fought back by pouring her too with a boiling water There's a cockroach inside her brain that distorts her right thinking, A reckless action drives her to face the law and answer her abusive dominance to a helpless helper. It doesn't mean that because she's a helper, she's not human and can't feel the pain caused by the boiling water. Hoping that toxic and abnormal criminal stay behind bars so she can reflect.
