A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck off the coast of Vanuatu, resulting in an instant tsunami warning. The quake struck 29 kilometers west of Port Vila and had a depth of 54 kilometers. A 5.5-magnitude aftershock was then detected at a depth of 49 kilometers. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre encouraged anybody affected by the earthquake to avoid the coast and look for higher ground. The Bureau of Meteorology claimed that there is no tsunami hazard to Australia, which is 2,000 kilometers from Port Vila.
