How do Mormons practise polygamy in the States, where the laws are so strict, without conviction in jail? Until I know, bigamy and polygamy are considered crimes punished by the penal code...I'm curious...
Until 1890, polygamy was legal and common amongst Mormons. Then, LDS Church President Wilford Woodruff issued a revelation, known as Official Declaration 1 (in the LDS faith, their church's president is known as "an Apostle, Seer and Revelator") which forbade polygamy as a practice w/in the LDS Church (Albeit, done under threat of U.S. government sanction).
