On July 10, 2023, an Odia ( a regional language in India) based news station 'Odisha TV' unveiled 'Lisa', which is India's first regional AI news anchor. Before that 'Sana' was unveiled on a national news channel. Sana was the first AI anchor in Indian news industry. Sana has already done 200 hours of program on the national news channel.
Lisa is the first one in the regional languages area. She marks significant milestone in regional television broadcasting. Lisa can speak a myriad of languages including Odia, English and many more. She is the first AI anchor in ths arena of free to air regional television broadcasting.
More works are being done to improve these AI news anchor and make them more proficient with their communication and interactions.
Now, the big question arises that Do we need to put our time and money to develop such technologies that would slowly replace the human ? We have so many well qualified and talented anchors out there who are seeking jobs. Should we kill their jobs using AI anchors? Is this the ethical use of AI?
