Scientists have discovered remarkably preserved leopard remains inside caves near the city of Arar in northern Saudi Arabia. The findings include the bones of seven mummified leopards and 54 others, ranging in age from about 130 years to nearly 1,800 years.
Researchers are still investigating how the animals were mummified, but they suggest the caves’ dry climate and stable temperatures may have played a role. The study, published in the journal Communications, Earth and Environment, provides a rare glimpse into the region’s ecological past and the leopard’s historical presence in Arabia.
