There are over 1,500 domain extensions available, and the prices can range from one buck to over hundreds (for new registration). You can choose your extension based on, Your budget, the audience you’re targeting, the type of project (e.g., .org for nonprofits, .io for tech, .store for ecommerce). But the question is are cheap domains that can be bought for $1=$2 really good?

Domains that cost $1 to $2 are not automatically bad, but they can have hidden downsides. Renewal costs can spike, and they sometimes lack privacy or support. They’re fine for experiments, but if your project matters long term, paying a bit extra for a solid, trustworthy extension is usually safer and more professional.

I do not have any idea about the value of the cheaper domains and their reliability in terms of use for websites.
Cheap domains can be big deal, especially in terms of future costs. You'll find the first year price cheap, maybe less than dollar, but when you come to pay for next year, the price triples or more. important to check the renewal fees before you make your purchase.

I like .name because the registration and renewal are both around 8 USD on Namecheap. Who has heard of it? Does anyone use it, and why?

I have heard of it but never used it. I mainly like to go with popular options as it helps me build a brand and also trust.
