According to the report, Australian universities and businesses are lobbying against legislation to cap international student numbers from next year. It’s a billion-dollar industry at the center of a political migration debate.
The report said that legislation has been described as a ‘rushed policy’ and ‘a political smokescreen’. But the government says changes are necessary to prevent people from using student visas as a backdoor into Australia.
The report added that the government says it has introduced the bill to amend the integrity of education services including weeding out unscrupulous operators and seeking to address issues that came to light through recent reviews into visa exploitation and the migration system.
I addition to the report, the Department of Home Affairs says the exploitation can range from providing poor quality education products to high student fees and false promises of pathways to permanent migration.
I think people in the comments are slightly confused. Many young Australians comparatively don’t want to go to university, and so there are loads of universities with few Australian kids. Even with HECS and loan help, people aren’t interested, and I believe this is to do with our toxic tall poppy culture. I was the only person in my year level 4 years ago to go to university, and I came from a low-income household compared to them. The majority either still live with their parents or went into trades and local Non-degree jobs. Until Australian kids show an interest in their education, then we might as well cater to other countries. We have a beautiful country after all.- one viewer said.
There will be many changes in 2025, so everyone there must prepare for their own battle. The war will also continue.
