Early Sunday,about 12 gunmen in two vehicles opened fire at the KwaNoxolo tavern in Bekkersdal, a township west of Johannesburg. The attackers shot people inside the bar and others fleeing the scene; one victim was a driver for an online car-hailing service. The toll was 9 dead and at least 10 wounded. Police described the act as "pure criminality," noting the gunmen also robbed victims.
