200 motorcycle taxi operators in Kisumu have begun transitioning to electric bikes under a new county government and private sector partnership. The "Go Electric Kisumu" initiative offers riders favorable financing terms and access to solar-powered charging stations. Rider Michael Owino, who made the switch, reported significantly lower daily operating costs. "I spend almost nothing on 'fuel' now compared to petrol. The bike is also quieter," he said. The project aims to reduce air pollution and noise in the lake-side city while cutting transport costs for operators. If successful, it will be rolled out to other major towns.
