According to the report, Boeing has secured a contract worth over $100 million to supply Guided Bomb Unit and Massive Ordnance Penetrators (GBU-57 MOP) for the US Air Force.
The report stated that a partially redacted justification and approval notice of the sole-source deal stated that the acquisition is “critically needed” to restock the weapon’s inventory following Operation Midnight Hammer, which was the
Pentagon’s strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities last year. Officials determined that only Boeing can produce the air-to-ground precision-guided munition and that turning to another vendor would result in unacceptable delays.
The report also stated that this action is essential to restore operational readiness and ensure Air Force Global Strike Command possesses the necessary assets to support strategic contingency war plans for all Combatant Commands. The procurement includes additional tail kits and all-up-round components, with associated deliveries to begin in January 2028. The package’s quantity was not revealed in the notice.
The report did that during Operation Midnight Hammer in June 2025, US Air Force B-2 Spirit stealth bombers dropped 14 GBU-57s on Iran’s Fordow and Natanz nuclear sites, marking the weapon’s first operational use.
The report added that the GBU-57 weighs 30,000 pounds (13,608 kilograms), measures 21 feet (6 meters), has a diameter of 32 inches (81 centimeters), using a GPS-enabled Bomb Live Unit or BLU-127/B penetrating warhead.
Additionally, Washington noted that the GBU-57 MOP production will conclude after the latest acquisition is completed, as the US military shifts to developing the more advanced Next-Generation Penetrator system.
