According to the report, Bollinger Shipyards has handed over the US Coast Guard’s 61st Sentinel-class patrol boat in Key West, Florida, as part of the ongoing Fast Response Cutter (FRC) program. The vessel, commissioned as the USCGC Olivia Hooker (WPC 1161), will be homeported in Pascagoula, Mississippi, joining the USCGC Benjamin B. Dailey (WPC 1123) and the USCGC Jacob Poroo (WPC 1125) in the region.

The report said that the newest cutter honors Dr. Olivia Juliette Hooker, the first African American woman to serve in the force. Enlisting in 1945 during the Second World War, she later became a psychology professor at Fordham University in New York and a lifelong advocate for education and civil rights.

“We are honored to deliver the Olivia Hooker to the US Coast Guard, continuing our proud tradition of providing high-quality, mission-ready vessels,” said Ben Bordelon, CEO and president of Bollinger.

I find it very positive that the United States Coast Guard continues to modernize its fleet with the delivery of new patrol boats like the USCGC Olivia Hooker. The addition of this vessel, named after such an important figure as Dr. Olivia Hooker, not only honors her legacy but also reflects the institution's commitment to diversity and social values. The Sentinel class is known for its efficiency and rapid response capability, which is fundamental for maritime surveillance, search and rescue, and security operations. Furthermore, the fact that these vessels are being delivered by Bollinger Shipyards, with its renowned reputation in shipbuilding, gives me confidence in the quality of the work. I believe that with these new units, the Coast Guard will be better prepared to fulfill its missions in an increasingly complex and changing environment. Fleet modernization is essential to maintaining maritime security in the United States.
