The political landscape in Brasília was upended as the Chamber of Deputies passed a controversial bill that could dramatically reduce the prison sentence of former President Jair Bolsonaro. Convicted and imprisoned earlier in the year for an attempted coup, Bolsonaro began serving a 27-year sentence. The new legislation, which applies retroactively, would reduce the maximum penalty for the crime of attempting to overthrow the government and could cut his sentence to just over two years. The session was chaotic, with leftist lawmaker Glauber Braga denouncing a "coup offensive" and being forcibly removed by police after occupying the speaker's chair.
