According to TBN Israel's Yair Pinto reports on the Israel-Hamas War. Abu Muhammad al-Julani, born Ahmad al-Shara, is the leader of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a group that evolved from the Syrian branch of al-Qaeda known as Jabhat al-Nusra. The U.S. State Department has designated both al-Julani and HTS as Specially Designated Global Terrorists. Despite his recent attempts to rebrand himself as a political leader in Syria, his long history of jihadist ideology, affiliation with al-Qaeda, and involvement in violent insurgency and terror-related activity are well documented by intelligence and counterterrorism agencies.
The report stated that Israel and other Western nations remain highly skeptical of his transformation narrative, especially in light of continued reports of human rights abuses and sectarian violence under his control in parts of Syria.
