Can failure to update an app cause it not to work properly?

I know that app developers are always churning out new updates to improve apps. But sometime, I feel it is too frequent when updates are just so close apart. And I would ignore the update.

Would not updating an app cause the app not to work properly?

Yes when you do not update an app, after awhile it might malfunction or even cause the phone to malfunction as well.
