Canada will become the third G7 country to announce that it intended to recognize a Palestinian state in September, according to Prime Minister Mark Carney.
According to Carney, the decision based on democratic reforms, such as the Palestinian Authority holding elections free of Hamas the next year.
US President Donald Trump said that the move would make a potential trade agreement between the US and Canada "very hard," while Israel's foreign ministry condemned it, calling it "a reward for Hamas."
Nonetheless, the majority of nations—147 out of the 193 UN members—officially acknowledge the existence of a Palestinian state.
