Cannot open a .apk file

I wanted to install an app on my smartphone which is not listed on google play and downloaded the apk. I find that I cannot open the .apk file on my smartphone as well as tablet. What could be the reason?

Have you checked your security settings? Maybe you have not authorized installation from external sources. Or the app might be damaged.

It is most likely that the apk file is corrupt if the phone settings allows for installation of third party apps.

I have installed other .apk files on the same smartphone/tablet, I am only facing a problem with this specific apk file, so I would like to troubleshoot.

Be sure that the apk file was downloaded properly. What message do you get when trying to install the apk file? Are you sure the apk file is compatible with that android version!
