Starting January 1, the Chinese government announced that condoms and other contraceptives will be subject to a 13% value-added tax. In other words, they want people to give up contraception to increase their population. Family planning is now considered a “luxury.”
Changes in their policy
As you know, China has come a long way. In the 1980s, it implemented a strict one-child policy. Then, realizing that things weren’t working, it relaxed the policy slightly in 2015 and allowed two children. In 2021, it raised the limit to three. Now, as its population begins to decline, it has decided to strengthen family planning measures to encourage people to “give up.”
Expert opinion
But not everyone is happy. Public health experts like Qian Kai say the measure is harmful to low-income people. In other words, if the price of condoms goes up, some people will stop using them altogether. This is where public health problems can get worse – unwanted pregnancies, diseases and life stress are all contributing factors.
In short, China says, “We tried to convince them, now we are putting pressure on them.” But the situation is dangerous. People wonder if this is the right approach or if it is a government push to have more children without considering the realities of people’s lives.
