A class ring lost for decades has been returned to a Nebraska family after it was found buried on a New Jersey beach by a treasure hunter using a metal detector.

Andrew Seifer unearthed the ring while walking along the beach and set out to find its owner, identified by the letters BW engraved on the ring. His investigation linked the ring to a Nebraska high school, about 1,300 miles from where it was found. He sought help through a public library, which contacted the Public Schools Foundation to solve the mystery.

BW was identified as Barbara Willedge, a student in the class of 1966. Willedge wrote that her sister had lived in Boston decades earlier, but how the ring ended up on a New Jersey beach remains a mystery.

It is a fascinating account of the small ring’s journey, from Nebraska to New Jersey, and finally returning home after decades.
