Based on my experience, whether to use cloud hosting or VPS hosting for an eCommerce site depends a great deal on the size of the business and also the anticipated growth of that business. For a small or medium-sized store looking for lesser costs with a relatively stable environment, it can have a VPS, as it has dedicated resources and configuration control. But when dealing with unpredictable traffic, marketing campaigns, or peak seasons, cloud usually does it better. In this case, scaling up will automatically happen, and there will be close to 100% uptime because the traffic is divided between multiple servers. Either one of them, VPS or cloud, can be fast; however, the cloud benefits from redundant infrastructure. My personal choice depends on budget, projected growth, and flexibility needed. If the business plans to expand, the safest option in the long run will be cloud hosting.
