At Rio de Janeiro’s Bioparque Zoo, animals recently received ice and frozen snacks to combat the summer heat. Leopards, monkeys and other species were fed a diet of ice made to suit their individual needs—some given frozen food, others a mixture containing frozen blood.
Zoo officials said the program is part of the animals’ routine care and helps provide thermal comfort during periods of extreme heat. Similar measures were also taken last summer, when northeastern Brazil was hit by record-breaking temperatures.
Temperatures in Rio had soared above 40 degrees Celsius , prompting city officials to issue a level 3 alert about the health risks associated with prolonged exposure to extreme heat.
