A Colorado mortuary co-owner was sentenced to 40 years in prison after being found guilty of abusing corpses. More than 180 bodies were improperly preserved, causing great grief to the families.
Jon Hallford pleaded guilty and apologized, but the victims’ families expressed their pain, describing him as a terrible person. They insisted that the harshest sentence be meted out so that justice could be served.
His wife, Carie Hallford, also pleaded guilty and is awaiting sentencing. The mortuary gave mourners fake ashes instead of the remains of their loved ones, adding to the pain.
Prosecutors said the crime was motivated by greed, despite the business making a lot of money. An investigation was launched after a strong odor was detected and the bodies were eventually found stacked without refrigeration.
Judge Eric Bentley said the crime tested the human spirit. Hallford pleaded guilty and acknowledged that the mark of his evil will remain for generations.
