Content is what gives retention to your website, it basically what makes users stay and engage. It’s because usually we rely too much you marketing methods that when we stop doing it, traffic declines at a very rapid rate due to low retention. (Hence why both the marketing and content need to be kept in check

Marketing can bring a wave of visitors, but it cannot keep them. Retention comes from content that answers questions, sparks interest, and makes people want to explore more pages. When both sides run together, the traffic becomes stable. When one stops, especially content, the decline shows quickly. It is a partnership you cannot ignore.

You are right, people often find it pretty hard to revisit a site that lacks contents, so if there is enough contents, traffic would keep coming in.
