Couple Arrested After Faking Kidnap To Finance Travelling To the US.
A Lagos‑based couple identified as Fred and Goodness have been arrested after allegedly staging their own kidnapping on January 7, 2026 and extorting about ₦10,000,000 from relatives and friends (who believed the pair had been abducted).
Police say the couple fabricated the abduction to solicit ransom because the husband needed funds to return to the United States but lacked the means.
The fake kidnap was reported and families and friends raised and handed over the ₦10m within three days to secure the couple’s “release,” abut subsequent police inquiries uncovered inconsistencies that led to the couple’s arrest and recovery of the
ransom.
