A coyote has been caught on camera swimming to Alcatraz Island in San Francisco, and is believed to be the first of its kind to visit the former prison that is now a tourist attraction.
Aidan Moore, a guest services worker for Alcatraz City Cruises, said he was helping guests get off the boat when a tourist showed him a video he had recorded of the coyote swimming to shore and climbing over rocks. Moore posted the video on Facebook and contacted the island’s rangers, but they were unable to find the animal.
Moore speculated that the coyote may have returned to the water, or perhaps it is hiding somewhere on the island. It could have come from San Francisco or Angel Island, where coyotes have been seen before. Either way, the animal had to swim more than a mile to reach Alcatraz.
It’s a unique experience that shows the resilience of animals and how they can transcend natural boundaries in amazing ways.
