The Cross River State House of Assembly has removed Theresa Ushie from her position as Chairman of Bekwarra Local Government Council over allegations of gross misconduct
The decision followed the adoption of the report from the House Committee on Judiciary and Public Petitions.
The controversy began on June 10, 2025, when eight councillors petitioned the Assembly, accusing Ushie of corruption, abuse of office, arbitrary suspension of councillors’ salaries, and violation of due process in council administration.
Following the petition, Ushie was suspended for 90 days, and Vice Chairman Egbung Odama was appointed acting chairman while the committee conducted a thorough investigation.
During Wednesday’s plenary in Calabar, 19 out of 25 lawmakers voted in favor of the committee’s recommendation, officially removing Ushie from office after months of inquiry.
