According to the report, the Russian Federation is facing an unprecedented rise in meningitis, with the number of cases in 2025 already double last year's figure. Doctors are sounding the alarm, emphasizing that the disease is taking lives and maiming. According to the Russian Ministry of Health, since the beginning of 2025, 1,266 cases of generalized meningococcal infection have already been recorded in the Russian Federation, which is more than twice the total number of cases for the whole of 2024 (600 cases). Among those infected, 948 are adults and 318 are children. The largest number of cases has been recorded in Moscow, where more than half of the cases in the country have been identified. The high mortality rate is of particular concern to doctors. Vladimir Chulanov, the chief freelance infectious disease specialist of the Russian Ministry of Health, reported that the mortality rate among adults has reached 16%, and among patients over 60 years of age, it exceeds 30%.
The report said that the infection affects not only the central nervous system, but also the heart, lungs, and other vital organs. As co-chairman of the All-Russian Union of Patients, Yuri Zhulev emphasized, every tenth infected person dies, and every fifth of the survivors becomes disabled. Experts also note a change in the structure of the disease: the virus increasingly affects the working-age population, including migrants. According to Natalia Pshenichnaya from the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor, about 60% of those infected are foreigners who came to the Russian Federation to work. Experts attribute the increase in cases to insufficient vaccination rates: the meningitis vaccine is not included in the national calendar and is not available for free.
In addition to the report, in Moscow, since 2021, only children are subject to mandatory vaccination, which has helped reduce their share among patients to 15%. Doctors insist on an urgent expansion of the vaccination program, including not only children, but also schoolchildren, students, and migrants. According to the president of the Children's Scientific and Clinical Center for Infectious Diseases, Yuri Lobzin, meningococcus is the most deadly of the vaccine-preventable infections; it is much more dangerous than influenza and COVID-19, the mortality rate of which is only 0.5 to 2.5% of cases.
Pitiful Russians, they suffer a lot at the hands of Putin. They are at war and now there is a deadly disease that attacks them.
