The devastating floods in Bangladesh and India have claimed at least 20 lives, and according to government officials, heavy rainfall and torrents of water from the Himalayas caused landslides and widespread flooding. While flooding is common during the monsoon season in Southeast Asia, the effects of climate change have exacerbated the situation. The chief minister described the situation as caused by "relentless rainfall-induced floods and landslides," which caused significant damage. In particular, the Garo Hills region has reported 15 deaths. Flooding has forced over 20,000 people in Bangladesh to evacuate their homes.
