For me the low and medium income earners would oftenly buy what they need. This is because the likes tend to be items that are not not considered as basic needs.
both, but not always. I do my best to prioritize my needs; I only buy my wants if I have spare funds or if I'm thinking of rewarding myself once in a while.
In practice, it's impossible for us to buy what you need, but we often buy what you like, like having lunch, we don't always go to the same restaurant, but we also go to another restaurant, even though it's more expensive. In dressing, we also often choose brands. So it's not always based on need.
Sometimes I buy what I need and what I like instantly during shopping. It's what I avoid, so I seldom do shopping to avoid buying not needed but liked.
Majority of the times, I usually go for what I need but there have been instances where I just go for what I like or what I am hungry for. There are times when you just feel like doing whatever comes your mind cause you are so stressed.
