Do you think owning a solar system can really help one to save money?

Personally, I think having a solar system at home or in the office is a great investment. Although the initial cost may be a bit high, the long-term benefits are great. You reduce your electricity bills and become more energy independent.

For areas with limited or expensive electricity, solar provides a stable and reliable source of energy. It is also environmentally friendly, which adds to its value. This is a great way to save money and protect the environment at the same time.

If you have the space and the ability, it is better to start small and gradually increase. Even a small system can help reduce your monthly costs. It is a smart step towards energy independence.

Some people are of the opinion that owning a solar panel would help them to save money. Are you of the same opinion that owning a solar system at home or office can drastically make one to save a lot of expenses?
Installing a photovoltaic system in a home is a long-term investment. This means that those who do so will initially incur a very high cost (which today few can afford), but over time and I mean several years they will reap a significant return in terms of money.

I live in Ireland, in the Cork area, and only this year I switched to solar at home. Energy costs are quite high here, so I made a small Excel with my consumption over the last year, the panel offer, and the SEAI grant to see if it actually makes sense. Without the numbers it’s just a nice slogan, but when you line everything up you realise how much you’re really paying every month for electricity.

I worked with Solar Path for the installation and they also handled the €1,800 grant and the paperwork. The system has panels plus a small battery, and the first proper bill after the installation was almost half of what I paid in the same period last year. The biggest difference shows during the day, when the washing machine, dryer, and boiler run more from what the panels produce than from the grid.

For those with a detached home and immediate financial resources, this is immediately feasible, and will result in significant savings over time on electricity costs. But for someone like me, who lives in a 26-unit building in Italy, it's difficult to achieve here, unfortunately, also due to the bureaucracy we have in our country!

Installing photovoltaic panels in Italy today with a power output of 3-6 kW can cost between €4,500 and €11,850, depending on whether batteries are included.
The annual savings can range from €600 to €2,000, depending on the size of the system and self-consumption, keeping in mind that the payback period is approximately 5-8 years.
