Does advertising on search results generate traffic to a site?

I always see that there are some ads displayed when I make searches on Google. Looking at it, do people click such ads on search results to generate traffic to the site advertised? Can one run an advert campaign on search engine results with traffic as the aim?

It is one of the fastest way to receive traffic. You can run ads on search engines especially on Google using Google adword. In fact, it is one of the best method to get tons of traffic overnight but it is quite expensive! Though it depends on niche!

I have never clicked through a ad that I find on Google search though. But I think it generates traffic substantially.

For me l think that it generates traffic to sites but l really doubt if can make a good organic traffic for sure
