I believe that it is necessary, because it is still a moment that happens once in a lifetime, although it may happen more often for some, but for me it is a good reason to relax and enjoy all the people who have gathered in one place
If you are getting married it's required that you open celebration for all your guest to enjoy, it's an even by which you have chose the right partner for yourself for life so is required celebrating
It depends on each individual, I think it's more of personal preference. There are does who prefer big weddings, and there are does who don't. Whatever you choose, always remember that there is life after wedding.
Of course, everyone will have a different opinion depending on their financial condition, but in my opinion, a big celebration at a wedding will depend on the request of the woman, even though it might be a waste of money.

But then special moments and memories can be made in an economic way too. There is no assurance that an extravagant marriage would make the moment more special and memorable.
