From the Manila, Philippines report, the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) anti-agricultural smuggling arm on Wednesday announced the seizure of 26,526 sacks of smuggled rice worth PHP38 million in a warehouse in Talisay City, Cebu.
According to the report, the Anti-Agricultural Economic Sabotage (AAES) Council conducted its first enforcement operation on June 20, a day after the Executive Committee issued a letter of authority directing the enforcement group (EG) to inspect different warehouses in Kimba Compound for allegedly containing smuggled agricultural products in violation of the AAES Law.
The report said that EG, composed of the Philippine National Police (PNP) Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) and the Maritime Group (MG), discovered that the area, occupied by River Valley Distribution Inc. (RVDI), contained 26,526 sacks of rice, weighing 863,345 kg.
In addition, on July 8, the Court of Tax Appeals granted a seizure order against the goods, following a petition by the PNP-CIDG in coordination with the DOJ’s Special Team of Prosecutors. The DOJ’s STP will file economic sabotage charges, a non-bailable offense under Philippine law, against those responsible.
