According to the report, the next leaders of the UAE’s AI-powered drones may not come from the military, but from the country’s top programmers.
The report stated that the State-owned EDGE Group is partnering with the Ministry of Defense (MoD) to launch the inaugural Drone Challenge, where Emirati citizens in teams of two or three will compete in a series of programming tasks.
The report added that the competition offers young programmers a platform to develop practical AI-backed software solutions while working with drones and other robotic systems. Emirati citizens aged 18 and older are eligible to participate, with over 900,000 dirhams ($245,000) in prizes up for grabs.
The report said that the Drone Challenge will take place at the 2026 UMEX Unmanned and Autonomous Systems Convention in Abu Dhabi from January 20 to 22.
