Niger was sanctioned by ECOWAS since july last year after the democratically elected government was toppled by military Personnels. The military personnels also imprisoned president Mohamad Bazoum and all his entire family. But the drama takes a twist when Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso announced that they are going to withdraw from ECOWAS. All the three countries have been sanctioned by ECOWAS on similar offenses.
Now, ECOWAS want to use diplomacy to bring the erring nations back to the fold. ECOWAS have changed tactics and decided to lift the sanctions to avoid humanitarian crisis in these nations. According to political analysts, the Russian-Ukraine war is exacting political influence on African countries.

I've lost count of how many countries in the Coup Belt of Africa have seen their elected governments fall.

That said, unless the West wants either Russia or worse, China, to make inroads in that region, we're going to have to swallow our Western pride and actually work with these countries, both on domestic concerns of theirs and on foreign policy issues. If that means cutting them a break sanctions-wide, so be it.
