Even though Pope Francis is in the hospital, Vatican work continues as usual

While Pope Francis is being treated for pneumonia in a Roman hospital, the Vatican's work presses on; cardinals are overseeing church business and planning for the Holy Year. The Vatican's day-to-day operations are managed by high-ranking cardinals and officials, although the Pope retains authority over significant doctrinal issues. Even during the Pope's hospitalization, the Vatican's seventy or so offices and departments continued their normal seven-day work week, a practice consistent throughout his nearly twelve-year papacy.

The Vatican would still function and would not pause for a minute even if the pope dies now. That's because they have built systems and structures beyond the pope.

Let us pray for the speed recovery of Pope Francis. While he is in the hospital bed he continues hoping to get back on his feet. There are things he would accomplish before the turnover of his successor.
