With no end to the war or the possibility of being released from service on the horizon, the number of Russian soldiers looking for a way out has increased sharply in the past few months. A database of soldiers suspended from service in the Southern Military District of the Russian Federation has been leaked to the Internet. The main document lists 19,210 Russian soldiers who were put on the wanted list for this crime. Most of them are privates. However, there are also corporals, sergeants and some officers among the deserters. The document also includes additional spreadsheets with data on 6,085 people who were previously found. It states that two-thirds of the soldiers who left or deserted in the Southern Military District of Russia without permission were mobilized for the war against Ukraine. More than half of the soldiers in question belong to the 1st and 2nd Army Corps, which bear the names of the so-called people's militias affiliated with the DRC and LRC, which Russia controlled and formed in the Donbas territory temporarily occupied in 2014.
It should also be noted that the figure announced for 19,210 soldiers serving in the Russian army does not reflect the real situation of deserters. This is because this database does not include soldiers who, for various reasons, were not included in the wanted lists by the commanders of the military units, and who limited their searches to their own search teams. In other words, we can say that the number of deserters is actually higher. Mediazona, an independent Russian research organization in exile, says that there have been approximately 7,400 AWOL cases in military courts since the beginning of the mobilization.
However, experts agree that this is only a small part of the number who tried to escape. This comes at a time when Russian authorities are making it increasingly difficult to avoid service. Authorities last year raised the maximum age for military service from 27 to 30, which will increase the number in the pool to at least 700,000 by 2025.Russian soldiers are often given suspended sentences so that they can return to base, apologize, and be sent straight back to the front. The real number of deserters is likely much higher, because few commanders want to officially declare a subordinate AWOL.
According to the report, Commanders don’t want to be reprimanded by their superiors for losing a man. So everyone tries to figure it out on their own to avoid officially entering a soldier’s name into the system.
Few deserters from the Russian military have spoken to the news media. They know at home and abroad that Russians who speak out against President Vladimir Putin can be killed. Seemingly insignificant individuals are hunted down and harassed, thrown from balconies in Europe or the United States. Journalists and activists have been poisoned. Many fugitives cannot escape to safety. Without international passports, they are trapped in the Collective Security Treaty Organization countries, Russia’s answer to NATO, where they still have easy access to the Kremlin. For these reasons, a crucial exit for Russian soldiers who have deserted is the surrender exercise called I Want to Live, conducted by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
According to U.S. Army Special Operations Commander Lt. Gen. Jonathan Braga, Ukraine’s messaging efforts have been a key tool in convincing thousands of Russians to leave their posts. According to the head of the US Army Special Operations Command, Kiev helped evacuate 17,000 Russians from the battlefield without firing a single shot thanks to its information operations. It is known that those who voluntarily surrendered through the I Want to Live application are registered as prisoners of war captured during the movement along with all other prisoners of war, in order to protect them from any reprisals from Moscow. Ukrainian authorities have stated that three to five Russian soldiers surrender every day under the I Want to Live program.
I think it's time for Russia to save themselves from Putin. I predict Putin will be out of office before 2025. The Russians are fed up with the dictatorship of Putin. Many died in the war because of his incompetence being a leader. He participates in other country's war when he is facing war with Ukraine.
