According to the report, a massive fire that broke out near a fishing port in Oita City’s Saganoseki District on Tuesday night has destroyed more than 170 buildings and claimed one life, local officials said. The blaze has yet to be fully extinguished as of Wednesday.
The report also stated that authorities are still identifying the victim, whose identity has not been released, who was found in cardiopulmonary arrest and later declared dead. A man in his 70s remains missing, while a woman in her 50s sustained minor injuries.
The report added that Oita prefectural and city governments have activated emergency response headquarters to coordinate firefighting and relief efforts. Oita Governor Kiichiro Sato has also requested disaster assistance from the Ground Self-Defense Force.
In Tokyo, the central government set up a liaison office under the crisis management center at the Prime Minister’s Office to monitor the situation.
