Fisheries Department Bans Usipa Fishing on Lake Malawi for Two Months
In a bid to protect the collapsing usipa(sardine) fishery, the Department of Fisheries announced a two-month ban on its capture, effective December 26. The closed season, lasting until February 26, 2026, is a scientific measure to allow the fish to spawn and replenish stocks. Patrols by marine police and community fisheries committees will be intensified. The move has sparked mixed reactions from fishing communities in Nkhata Bay and Mangochi,relief efforts.
