MRC Free Speech America: FL Gov. Ron DeSantis Reaffirms Rejection of CBDCs and Dystopian Digital Tyranny
The governor of Florida and one of his officials emphasized their commitment to rejecting digital IDs and central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) as the U.K. marches toward adopting the dystopian tool proposed by the World Economic Forum.

The U.K. government just made digital IDs mandatory for anyone in Britain who applies for or holds a job. Gov. Ron DeSantis condemned this move on Sept. 26, posting, “A so-called ‘digital ID’ is very 1984-ish. Hope our friends across the pond will reject this — a precursor to even more government control.” He also warned that digital ID would be a precursor to CBDCs and proudly highlighted how Florida banned the latter, since “CDBC strips individuals of their financial privacy and independence, and would be a tool for abuse by central authorities.”

Stopping digital ID, DeSantis argued in response to polling on its unpopularity in Britain, would be “a big win for freedom. It’s obvious that they want to use digital ID for access to banking, medical, and even voting.”

DeSantis is not the only Florida official to pay attention to this issue. Florida’s tourism agency chief Bryan Griffin turned down his invitation to WEF’s Urban Transformation Summit this month in San Francisco, citing WEF’s support for digital tools used to implement social credit scores and government tyranny. Gov. DeSantis (R-FL), who previously signed legislation banning CBDCs, responded by confirming Griffin’s position.

Griffin posted his email response on Oct. 1, rejecting the WEF’s proposed tyranny. “The World Economic Forum’s values and stated objectives do not align with the State of Florida, including the WEF’s efforts to transform society through top down government regulations and institute dangerous programs like digital IDs and Centralized Bank Digital Currencies,” he wrote. “We choose the values of Destin and Dunedin over Davos. Individual liberty and national sovereignty matter and should be protected.”

In response to a Fox News article about Griffin’s email, DeSantis posted on X Oct. 3, “When we said that the policies of the World Economic Forum are dead on arrival in Florida, we meant it.”

In fact, DeSantis already took action against the Orwellian digital tools championed by WEF. In 2023, DeSantis signed bipartisan SB 7054 into law, banning CBDCs in Florida. In the wake of the Biden administration looking into creating digital currency, DeSantis expressed his concerns and reason for signing the law, “Maybe you bought a firearm last week and they don’t want you to buy another one this week. Anyone with their eyes open can see the dangers of what this type of arrangement would mean.”

Like the Biden administration, WEF has long promoted the adoption of digital currency and digital IDs. In 2022, WEF released a white paper with a proposal for a digital ID that would be required for everyday life in society: from banking, to voting, to social media, to healthcare and even travel bookings. And in June 2023, WEF developed “interoperability principles” to promote a global system of CBDCs. Later, in 2024, a WEF panel promoted the goal of CBDCs entirely replacing cash. And, in communist China, where WEF usually hosts a summer conference, digital currency and digital IDs are already components of the government’s social credit system.
