On Tuesday, New Zealand made the decision to close down its greyhound racing sector because of animal welfare issues, which claims an "unacceptably high" number of wounded and dead dogs. Winston Peters, the Minister for Racing, announced that the sector would be phased out gradually over the following 20 months, giving trainers time to rehome the dogs. He added, "This is not a decision taken lightly, but it is ultimately driven by the need to protect the welfare of racing dogs." The closure will result in job losses for people connected to greyhound racing in New Zealand. According to the non-profit organization Safe for Animals, thirteen greyhounds died in New Zealand during the racing season of 2023-2024.
