So, these gang guys in Guatemala grabbed 40 prison guards and held them hostage. I was reading about it, and what really got to me was the security angle. It's scary when you stop and think about how much control organized crime has inside those prisons, not just in Guatemala but everywhere. I mean, how does that even happen?
The whole thing is just shocking because of how big it was. Forty hostages... that's a lot! It makes you wonder what kind of resources these gangs have and how they're able to pull something like that off.
Looking at the bigger picture, prison and justice system reform has to be the solution, right? It seems like Guatemala really needs to put some serious effort into making its justice system stronger. Maybe that means more training for the guards, better pay to keep them from being bribed, or a big investment in updated technology to keep track of things. It probably means all of the above, and then some. If the bad guys are in control inside the prisons, it is difficult to ever get control outside the prisons. It’s a mess that needs fixing, and it seems urgent. Hopefully things get sorted out before something even worse happens. Thinking about families worried about their loved ones keeps me awake at night.
