According to the report, a home health nurse has been arrested after allegedly being caught on camera abusing an 18-year-old patient who is "unable to defend herself" due to her medical condition, police said.
St. Cloud Police Department said that Nia Ayers, 24, faces charges of aggravated abuse of the elderly. The abuse was discovered when the victim's mother noticed cuts and scrapes on her daughter's face, prompting her to review footage from the family's home security cameras.
The video showed Ayers repeatedly taping the victim's mouth shut, ripping the tape off, holding a washcloth over her mouth, and shaking the nonverbal patient's BiPAP breathing machine while it was connected to her nose.
The victim in this case is completely unable to defend herself or cry out for help," said Douglas Goerke, St. Cloud Police chief. The chief said that it was a heinous crime and that the criminal might have other victims of abuse.
Police said Ayers turned herself in late Wednesday night and was subsequently arrested and booked into the Osceola County Department of Corrections.
