How can a physical book be converted to become an ebook?

A friend has a physical book that I really want to get. And he is staying in another city entirely. I am thinking of a way that the book would be converted from the physical format it is in to an ebook so that it can be sent t me. How do you convert a paper book to ebooks?

The best way i can think of is to scan the book, when you scan it to your phone or computer, you now have a soft copy of the book.

If the book is not too big, you can use your phone camera to snap it and save it in a pdf format.
