How do I know a Wi-Fi network that is secure before I connect my device?

We have to be security conscious at anytime when we want to connect to Wi-Fi networks. There is security risks connecting to public Wi-Fi networks.

What are the things that indicate that a WiFi network is secure? How can I check those things before connecting?

Public Wi-Fi networks are usually not secure, so it is better not to use them especially if they are free. A lot of time has to be wasted to remove the malware from free wifi later.
