Imagine having a staff whom you are trying your best to keep happy. And that staff suddenly ghosts you and your business. Only to be seen after a short while working for your direct competitor.

How would you handle such a situation as a business owner? Let it slide?

This kind of situation ise to put the employee in dilemmatic condition. The first step is to increase the work load of other staff and start looking for replacement. The employer may take over the work for the mean time or increase the work load of the staff. By so doing, salary of the worker that stopped work will be split among the workers that are doing the extra work

You can't do anything to them honestly, the only way where you can have legal ground to do something is if there was an agreement at the very beginning. Most people before they give out jobs there is always an agreement where the worker is not allowed to leave suddenly, he has to give notice two to three months in advance.

Yeah where there was no agreement at the start of the job they might be little or nothing you can do if the staff leaves

More reason an employer must have clearly defined terms with a potential employee before recruiting the person.

So that you are not taken unawares at anytime as you have your rules in place and they should be respected

As a good business man you should let that go and maintain a good working relationship with that fellow businessman.
That's the best way to handle it. Find your own happiness by doing the right thing for your job and money making ventures

If the staff member has signed a contract that has rules about giving notice, etc you are well covered. In its absence there is little one can do to stop that person from working for a competitor. Least you can do is not pay them their dues.

Some of them just wait to get their last pay and then, they would ghost on the organisation. They don't even turn in resignation letters most times.

It is therefore important that a contract is signed when someone gets employed. The Company can sue them. Sometimes it is not worth the time spent though

That kind of staff lacks manners. She might be lured with a better pay that lead her to temptation. It's also hurts but that staff cannot escape her karma. I doubt if she can look at the eyes of her previous employer.
